On an especially bright day, we can all appreciate the functionality of a reliable pair of sunglasses. But the second we step indoors or the sun goes down, that pair of glare-reducing sunglasses transforms into the phenomenon known as “shades.” Shades have become the stuff of legend through movies and other forms of mass entertainment; they allow the wearer to add a layer of effortless cool.

Arnold Schwarzenegger implemented shades to spectacular effect in “The Terminator.” Tom Cruise donned an iconic pair of shades in “Risky Business” and then went on to show off some aviators in “Top Gun.” But movie characters aren’t the only ones to gain a boost of charisma from sunglasses. They are the mark of the teenage rebel and the high-powered corporate executive. Sunglasses convey an attitude unlike any other piece of eyewear.
